Drag Queens Lifestyle Or Disguise - 1397 Words
Drag Queens: Lifestyle or Disguise Mama Ru (RuPaul Charlesââ¬â¢ Drag Queen persona) gave her perspective on an episode of Drag Race with this quote: ââ¬Å"If you canââ¬â¢t love yourself, how in the hell are you gonna love somebody else?â⬠the aspiration with this quote, it is to show the relevance that even with a different lifestyle, such as the ââ¬Å"dragâ⬠life, self-love is respected in that controversial world. Over the centuries, men dressing as women has been going on since the dawn of the theatre, but what society do not know is the great Shakespeare, the beloved wordsmith of the English language, invented the term ââ¬Ëdragââ¬â¢; to describe the event of cross-dressing. Even after women were allowed, dressing up as women was often used in entertainment forâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦This game initiated a backlash from many transgender activists, who were upset by the nature of the segment and its use of the word ââ¬Å"she male,â⬠which GLAAD ( Gay Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) explains is a term that ââ¬Å"dehumanizes transgender people and should not be used.â⬠(Ford). A month after the episode aired, in a YouTube clip starring fellow Drag Queen Blathnaid Mcgee, she addresses the RuPaulââ¬â¢s Drag Race mini-game controversy and clears the definition of she-male within the Drag community versus what the Trans community would define as a ââ¬Å"she-male.â⬠(QueensOfTheWeek). At the same time the episode went viral, the ongoing conversations about language sparked by the show reflects what Time Magazine recently called ââ¬Å"the transgender tipping pointâ⬠, with spokespeople like Laverne Cox speaking regularly to mainstream media outlets, visibility for transgender people, especially trans women of color is on the rise (Ford). In many ways, the feud over Drag Race seemed to rise from the visibility that LGBTQ members has increasingly achieved a realm of recognition, and an instinct to defend the authenticity of identities. Another example figure for the transgender community is Venus Xtravaganza (born Thomas Pellagatti), a central performer in the documentary, Paris is Burning. During her interview she gave a very specific quote that give a stance to her personal change and how she felt about her performance character: ââ¬Å"I don t feel like thereShow MoreRelatedFilm, Paris, Burning, And The Subculture Of Black And Latina / Os1387 Words à |à 6 Pagesblatant intent of 1980s ballroom drag shows, the ââ¬Å"realnessâ⬠of the performances was highly dependent on ââ¬Å"social conditions in which they are performedâ⬠(Gregory 28). These physical expressions through ââ¬Å"processes of non-traditional literacy production, gender/race/sexuality articulation,â⬠is presented in ways that outside of these spaces, would be ââ¬Å"definitionally obscene,â⬠much like the harassment and violence that transgender and gay individuals, along with drag queens, often encountered in 1980s hegemonicRead More Translating Transgender: A laymans guide to the least-known minority2899 Words à |à 12 Pageswithout being hassled.
